![]() It is unclear why Martin started the fire – some suggest he disliked the style of worship at the Minster and others have reported that he claimed to dislike the noise the organ made. The instrument is believed to have dated in part from 1632. The fire wasn't detected until the following morning, but despite the best efforts of firefighters, the blaze completely destroyed the Quire including its medieval panelling, stalls, roof and the Grand Organ. Martin reportedly used a rope taken from the bell tower to climb into the Quire, before setting the area alight and making his escape through a window. The blaze had been started by Jonathan Martin, a frequent visitor to the cathedral at the time, who had attended a service that afternoon and then hidden inside until the building was locked for the night. The Quire was built between 1361 and the 1420s, although much of the original structure was destroyed in a fire started deliberately on the night of 1 February 1829. The present building was begun in about 1230 and completed in 1472. This is the Quire at York Minster, England, the second-largest Gothic cathedral of Northern Europe. The nature of stereographic projection is that the outer parts of the image are stretched and become disproportionately large compared to the central area. The piano is actually a regular-sized grand piano and the Chapter House is quite a small room. Like many of the medieval cathedrals of England it was built in the Early Gothic style.Īlthough the piano looks very small in this photo, it's really an optical illusion created by the stereographic projection I've used to render this spherical panorama. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the UK (in floor area) at around 5,000 square metres (54,000 sq ft), after Liverpool, London St Paul's and York Minster. Construction commenced in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the High Middle Ages. Lincoln Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Lincoln. In 2019 the cathedral was featured in the Amazon motoring television series The Grand Tour, during which the presenters hosted a funeral for the mid-size Ford saloon as part of the third season's final episode. The cathedral also doubled as Westminster Abbey for the film Young Victoria, filmed in September 2007, and again in June 2018 for the Netflix Shakespeare film The King. For a time these murals and replicas remained in the Chapter House, as part of a Da Vinci Code exhibit for visitors, but in January 2008 they were all sold off in an auction to raise money for the cathedral. To make the Lincoln Chapter House appear similar to the Westminster Chapter House, murals were painted on a special layer over the existing wall, and elsewhere polystyrene replicas of Isaac Newton's tomb and other Abbey monuments were set up. It seems to have become quite a sought after location for movie sets, having been used for the filming of The Da Vinci Code with Tom Hanks in August 2005 where, along with the cloisters, it took on the role of Westminster Abbey, as the Abbey had refused to permit filming. This is a super-wide-angle view of the Chapter House in Lincoln Cathedral, England. I transformed the spherical panorama to the 2D rectangle you see here using stereographic projection. Each frame was taken with 5 bracketed exposures to capture the full dynamic range from the bright windows to the dark corners. I created this spherical panorama by taking 9 frames with a fisheye lens and stitching them together to form a 188 megapixel image that covers the entire 360˚ view, from floor to ceiling. Having been built in a monumental Romanesque style, the galilee porch, lady chapel and choir were rebuilt in an exuberant Decorated Gothic style. ![]() Architecturally it is outstanding both for its scale and stylistic details. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Ely and a suffragan bishop, the Bishop of Huntingdon. The east end of the cathedral, which contains this chapel, the Presbytery and the High Altar, was completed in 1252. The present building dates back to 1083, and it was granted cathedral status in 1109. The chapel is a shrine to the Saxon queen Etheldreda who founded a monastery on the site in 673. This is a spherical view of St Etheldreda's Chapel in Ely Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral in the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.
